FAQ
What is FLY KiDS?
FLY KiDS is a dance company for young Houston-area dancers. It is one of the showcase performing groups for FLYworks, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote dance as an artistic, fitness and character-building activity for youth.
What are the requirements to be in FLY KiDS?
Students are generally in the 3rd through 7th grades, well behaved and respectful, positive and energetic, with a strong work ethic and a love of performing.
How can I become a member of FLY KiDS?
Contact the FLYworks office about auditioning to become a member of FLY KiDS.
What is the style of dance?
It is a theatrical style of dance that enhances the skills that the kids already have in hip hop, jazz, and gymnastics then adding choreography and acting to portray characters and personalities onstage.
How can I get FLY KiDS to perform at my event?
The short answer is to contact the FLYworks office to discuss a booking. FLY KiDS dancers are 3rd -7th graders and attend school like most other kids. That means scheduling is usually done on weekends, holidays, summer, and some late afternoons and evenings. There will be a performing fee for most commercial events. For performances for other arts, charitable, or non-profit organizations, there is usually no fee, but a modest honorarium to support the FLY KiDS program would be appreciated.
When and where are rehearsals?
Currently rehearsals are normally two evenings a week on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:00PM at the Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex near Minute Maid Park (downtown Houston).
What does it cost to be a member of FLY KiDS?
Currently there is an $83 per month tuition which covers a portion of the cost of FLY KiDS. FLYworks, its donors, and paid performances cover some of the other expenses like costumes, music, publicity and promotion, concert production, etc. Dancers are responsible for buying performance shoes and a few other personal items from time to time. Tuition scholarships are sometimes available through donations.
How did FLY KiDS get started?
FLY KiDS is a merging of concepts and choreography of two very successful programs–Kathy Wood’s professional FLY Dance Company and Rhonda Valencia’s Morris Fifth Grade Dance Team from Pasadena ISD. Over the past 5 years Kathy toured FLY Dance Company throughout the U.S. and in Europe. Rhonda's Morris dance team has been an unqualified success for the past four years performing at Pasadena ISD functions and other events in the Houston area. Both have many years of experience teaching dance in public schools in the Houston area.
What are the benefits of being in FLY KiDS?
It’s a lot of fun and a real opportunity to learn more about dance in high quality productions at exciting performance venues. Dancers will be working with Kathy Wood and Rhonda Valencia, extrordinary teachers. It's good exercise and rewarding to be a part of a successful team. Working hard and achieving goals in FLY KIDS builds confidence and character.
Who runs the FLY KiDS program?
Kathy Wood is FLYworks artistic director. Rhonda Valencia is the FLY KiDS director. Together they choreograph, rehearse, costume, and produce the FLY KiDS performances. Both have a passion for and many years of experience teaching dance.
Why does FLYworks have a group like FLY KiDS and underwrite its support?
FLY KiDS is an integral part of FLYworks.
From a business perspective: It's much better to "show" than "tell" when explaining what the FLYworks mission is. FLY KiDS—in performances, images, videos, and other activities—serves to demonstrate the type of dancing and dance programs FLYworks advocates for youth.
From a personal perspective: Working with kids and developing them is what the staff of FLYworks loves to do. Currently every staff member is a former or current public school teacher with a history of service and acomplishment.
