The FLY KiDS director is Kathy Wood, the creator, choreographer, and artistic director of the national and international touring FLY Dance Company whose style and choreography has been adapted for FLY KiDS. She calls this performing style "theatrical hip hop."
Kathy performed as a high school band member and majorette, Kilgore Rangerette, and Dallas Texann. She earned her college degree in Fine Art with dance certification. As a dance team director, her groups were consistent winners and she was widely known for her innovation and creativity. Her Spring Branch Memorial dance teams performed nationally and internationally (New York, Hawaiii, England, Scotland, Spain, and Greece).
After retiring from teaching high school, she developed performing groups from street dancers in Houston, ultimately carrying FLY Dance Company to national prominence performing a yearly average of 60 concerts and 100 school outreach shows. Her hip hop groups traveled to 30 states in the U.S. and countries including Estonia, France, Mexico, Germany, and Austria.
After six years of touring, her physical exhaustion led to the shutdown of FLY Dance Company in 2006. She immediately started FLY KiDS in Houston and worked with them until retiring to Tyler.
After a year off, she and her husband Mike, began FLY KiDS in Tyler.
