Frequently Asked Questions

What is FLY KiDS?
FLY KiDS is a FREE dance program for trained or untrained Tyler-area boy and girl dancers who are talented and love to perform.

What are its goals?
The goals for FLY KiDS are to build dancers’ confidence and self-esteem, improve their physical health, take each dancer's skills to a higher level, be positive representatives of Tyler-area youth, and become the most entertaining youth performing group in East Texas.

How is FLY KiDS funded?
It is funded by donors, sponsors, fund-raising events, and performance honoraria.

Who directs the FLY KiDS program?
Kathy Wood is the FLY KiDS director. She was the creator/director of FLY Dance Company, a professional touring group based in Houston which toured the USA, Europe, and Mexico (2001-2006) averaging 60 concerts and 100 school shows each year. Mike Wood is the business manager. FLY KiDS is organized and managed under FLYworks, LLC. Kathy and Mike are prohibited by the FLYworks, LLC Operating Agreement from taking salaries. All after-tax revenue will be applied to the program’s expenses.

How did FLY KiDS get started?
Kathy and Mike created FLY KiDS in Houston in 2006 and modeled it after FLY Dance Company. After moving to Tyler, they thought the FLY KiDS program would be a good activity for the community and its youth.

What is the style of dance and music used?
It is a theatrical style of dance that enhances the skills that the dancers already have in hip hop, breaking, jazz, and gymnastics then adding performance arts, choreography, and acting to portray characters and personalities onstage. Movement is age appropriate and clean-cut. The music varies from Classical to Jazz to Latin to Pop to Hip Hop and is clean and age appropriate.

What are the requirements to be in FLY KiDS?
Members should be 9 to 16 years old (exceptions possible), well behaved, respectful, positive, energetic, and open-minded. They should be committed to working hard with the goal of taking their performing skills to another level. Regular attendance at rehearsals, performances, and summer camp is expected.

How are members selected?
Members are selected by audition. Group auditions are held twice yearly by attending either the FLY KiDS Summer Camp or the January workshop. At other times, appointments can be made for auditioning at a rehearsal. There is no fee to audition. If selected at audition, dancers will participate in the next four FLY KiDS rehearsals after which a final decision will be made.

Where does FLY KiDS meet?
Rehearsals are held year-round at the Glass Recreation Center Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00PM and generally align with the TISD school calendar.

How much does it cost to be a member?
A yearly $10 membership fee for the Glass Recreation Center is required. Where possible, expenses for the FLY KiDS program and members are paid by FLYworks, LLC. Members need to provide their own performance shoes, though assistance may be available for those as well.
