Rehearsals

Where and When
FLY KiDS rehearses at the Glass Recreation Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. In general holidays and days off are aligned with the TISD school calendar. (Important exception: Attendance in July of the one-week Summer Camp is essential.)

Atmosphere
Rehearsals are fun but the work attitude is serious. Dancers are expected to be self-disciplined, attentive, willing to work energetically, and to stay focused on learning from the vast experience of the director, Kathy Wood. There is one five-minute break at the mid-point of rehearsal.

What Will Be Taught
Kathy teaches showmanship. It is her goal to teach FLY KiDS to be entertaining performers while, at the same time, imparting to them the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Learing to be a good entertainer requires a lot of individual development: Dance skills and the ability to learn dance sequences and transitions, of course, but also learning how to win over an audience with eye contact, acting ability, and stage presence.

Choreographic Style
The choreographic style that Kathy will be teaching will mainly be the style she created for her professional touring group, FLY Dance Company. She calls this performing style theatrical hip hop: choreographed hip-hop movement set to music of many types—including pop, classical, musical theater, Latin, and hip hop.

Methodology
Frequently, solos and ensemble work are alternated to add variety and increase the impact of both. All dancers are expected to develop their own solos so that they are prepared to be selected for soloing at any time.

Life Lessons

In addition to dance skills, we believe that students benefit from learning to focus, practicing self-discipline, memorizing choreography, overcoming shyness, teamwork, working to master dance steps and tricks, many hours of purposeful physical work, and commiting to the stated goals of the group. In our opinion, these are valuable life-lessons that are learned from being members of FLY KiDS.

Commitment
There is nothing formal, but these commitments are expected of each FLY KiDS dancer:
—Regular rehearsal and performance attendance.
—Working daily to becoming a better performer.
—Working to make FLY KiDS the most entertaining youth performing group in East Texas.
